Hilla Business

RRA EBM compliance without the paperwork

How Hilla Business turns every sale into a compliant receipt and a clean ledger entry, so month-end isn't a crisis.

Every VAT-registered business in Rwanda has to issue receipts through the Rwanda Revenue Authority's Electronic Billing Machine (EBM) system. In practice, many small and medium businesses run two parallel worlds: the EBM for receipts, and a notebook, spreadsheet or separate accounting package for everything else. Reconciling the two at month-end is slow and error-prone.

Hilla Business was designed so that those two worlds are the same system.

One sale, three records, zero re-typing

When a cashier completes a sale in Hilla Business, three things happen together:

  • An EBM-compliant receipt is issued for the customer.
  • Stock levels update for every item on the receipt.
  • A balanced journal entry is posted to the ledger: revenue, VAT payable and cash, mobile money or receivables.

Because all three come from the same event, they can't drift apart. The VAT figure your accountant sees is the VAT figure on the receipts.

An accountant built in

Most shop owners don't want to learn double-entry bookkeeping, and they shouldn't have to. Hilla Business keeps a proper general ledger underneath, but presents it as the questions owners actually ask: What did I sell this week? What do I owe? How much VAT am I holding? What's my real profit after costs?

For businesses that do work with an accountant, the same ledger exports cleanly, so the accountant spends their time advising instead of re-typing receipts.

Engineering for the counter, not the demo

  • Offline-first: sales keep working when the internet drops, and sync when it returns.
  • Fast at the till: search by name, code or barcode, with keyboard shortcuts for busy counters.
  • Role-based access, so cashiers sell, managers adjust stock and only owners see the full books.
Compliance should be a side effect of running your shop properly, not a second job.
